LIFE IN MY TOWN

From March to August 2010 : REGISTRATION and TEACHER'S TIME : The subject for 2010 and 2011 is our pupils’ life in their towns. We will talk about their favorite places and the activities that they pursue outside of school. I’ve asked my current pupils the following question to help me choose the places I should take pictures of : “For you, what are the four most important places in your town, apart from your home?”.

The teacher will take a photo of each of those 4 places using a digital camera. He or she will also write a 50-WORD CAPTION in English to describe each photo and send them to the teacher managing the project.

INFORMATION : As you know, I can’t insert a photo with the face of a person on the website, so please when you take a photo wait until there is nobody on the photo.

IF YOU SEND ME A PHOTO OF A CINEMA, PLEASE SEND ME THE INTERNET LINK USED IN YOUR COUNTRY TO KNOW WHAT IS PLAYING. In France, for example : http://www.allocine.fr

Pics01 BOURGOIN-JALLIEU FRANCE : In Bourgoin-Jallieu, we have 3 shopping centers with ample parking which makes shopping easier. The pupils taking part in the V2CL project often go to the restaurant situated close to the school. Some of them have after-school jobs in that restaurant. Our pupils like walking the pedestrian streets which are well-developed with a lot of clothing shops. Our cinema is a multiplex with a 3D theater, and the listings are presented on an Internet site called allociné.

Pics02 MAINZ GERMANY : Hauptbahnhof : This is the main, relatively large railway station in Mainz. A lot of trains and buses arrive and leave here, especially to the cities Frankfurt, where there is also the airport, and Wiesbaden. Mainz Hauptbahnhof has recently been called the best station in the Rhine-Main area. Höfchen : Höfchen is a little square between the theatre, opposite which there is a statue of Gutenberg (the inventor of the printing press), the cathedral and the market square. There are lots of shops here, and the council has just put up benches aroung the fountain so that you can enjoy it better. There is also a little kiosk where you can buy the best pretzels in Germany. Schillerplatz : This used to be the market square of the simple folk. Later, in the 18th century, many chic houses were built here, most of which are still there. One of them houses the Institut Francais, where you can learn French. Behind the statue of Schiller, one of Germany's best-known playwrights, there is the "Fastnachtsbrunnen" which represents carneval, a very important time of year in Mainz. Rhein : The Rhine is a huge river which separates Mainz and Rhineland-Palatinate, from the next Land, Hessen. Many ships and barges can be seen on the Rhine, and on the banks you can walk for miles on a pleasant promenade. In the summer, there are beaches along the banks, and you could think you were at the seaside. At breaktime our students go to the banks of the Rhine.

Pics05 ATHENS GREECE : Our school is located in the northern side of the suburb Nea Filadelfia. Nea Filadelfia (in Greek: Νέα Φιλαδέλφεια, meaning New Philadelphia) is a suburb in the northern part of Athens (5 Km from the centre of the capital of Greece). The region (Coordinates : 38°2′N 23°42′E) was settled by Greek refugees from Anatolia in Asia Minor after 1922. Today, a big part of the municipality is urbanized while the businesses are along the main roads. Our pupils mainly during weekend like to spend their time in cafes inside the central park near the artificial lake or in small restaurants in the centre of the town, where a lot of clothing shops and sport centres are located. AEK FC is very popular football team here and all citizens are waiting for rebuilding the new stadium. The Cine Alsos, near the park, is a cinema in open air and plays movies during the summer. Buses and metro are connecting Nea Filadelfia with other big market places in Athens and so very often meetings among the young people are carried out in the center of Athens. There, the friends all together enjoy shopping, quick food or are visiting entertainment places (sport, theatre or cinema). http://www.kinimatografoi.gr/

Pics06 KRANJ SLOVENIA : It is great if you can park your car on the place where it is safe and you can easy find the free place for parking. I also like the good appearance of this car park because I like the modern architecture and bright colors. Some people say that this car park doesn't match with other buildings. Kranj is an old town. The center of the old Kranj got the today's looks in the 18 and 19 the centuries when it was under the authority of Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. In the 20 century this part of Kranj had a lot of shops where people were able to buy various goods. In recent times only a few shops have remained here because shopping centers appear on the periphery of the town. Cars are not allowed to come in this part of town. I like to visit the Carniola museum in Kranj which is also situated in the old part of Kranj. When guests from other schools come to visit us we like to show them this museum. There is a permanent exhibition Gold thread which shows the life in this area from 3.000 years ago to today. You can see the static virtual people who cultivate the wheat, hunt the fishes, sew the clothes etc. There you can see the pictures on which there are the mammoths which also lived here a thousand year ago. Do you know that Neanderthalers lived in the same period and they walked around 60 km every day? You can see also the old chests which our forefathers used instead of wardrobes. The greatest Slovene poet France Preseren died in Kranj. We use his lyric Zdravljica as the national anthem. Near the theatre you can see a huge statue of France Preseren. The theatre has his name. It is called Theatre of France Preseren Kranj.

Pics09 SINGAPORE : Singapore is a small city-state and is separated into different districts. Each district is fully-equipped with all kinds of facilities to cater to the people living there. There are four important places which our students like to hang out after school. Top on the list is a shopping centre which includes shops, restaurants, bus interchange as well as a cinema complex. This is one of the links to book movie tickets online : http://www.cathay.com.sg/cineplexes/index.html Another place which our students like to hang out after school is the library. Lastly, the beach is another favourite location for families to hang out during the weekends or in the evening after a long day at work.

Pics10 DROBETA-TURNU-SEVERIN ROMANIA : We live in a city situated on the left bank of the Danube. The city is a very old one, dating back to Roman times. One of the pictures represents the remains of Trajan’s bridge, built more than 2,000 years ago by the architect Apollodor of Damascus. One of the people’s favorite places in town is the well – in summer young and old people gather around it, especially at night, to watch its changing lights. The symbol of the town is the Water Castle. Even if it looks medieval, it is only (!) 70 years old. It is situated in the center of the town, very close to the main shopping area. Last, but not least, another favorite place is the Roses’ Park, where, among thousands of roses of different colors there is a monument erected for the memory of the Romanian soldier who lost their lives during World War I and II.

Pics11 WROCLAW POLAND : With its population around 700 000, Wrocław is quite a big city where everybody can find a suitable entertainment for themselves ranging from the opera house, theatres, museums to cinemas and clubs. Multiplex cinemas seem to be the most popular places amongst young people, where they can watch the latest movies from all over the world (see http://mobiwroclaw.nazwa.pl/filmy/ ). Teenagers, especially girls, like to spend time shopping or window-shopping in modern shopping malls. Those who are keen on the atmosphere of the Old Town go for walks to the Old Market and listen to open air concerts organized there from time to time. Nearby the Old Town there is the top 1 for young people: the area of clubs and restaurants which become extremely busy with the youth at weekend nights. Those who prefer keeping fit to having noisy nightlife go to a sports centre to work out at a gym or have a swim.

Pics12 ARUCAS LAS PALMAS SPAIN : Living in the Canary Islands, we are graced with wonderful weather all year round, that is the reason why young people in our town, Arucas, spend most of their free time in the open air! Photo number one is “Calle León y Castillo”, the pedestrian street near the church, in the oldest part of Arucas. Young people gather here for shopping and for drinks in the open air cafeterias. It is also very close to the library and the cultural activities which are organised in it. Photograph 2 is the “San Juan´s Church Square”. Open air parties, the very popular “verbenas” and rock and popular music concerts are celebrated here. Youngsters meet here to dance, drink and socialise in the evening. Photograph 3 is “Constitution Square”, where pop concerts often take place. It is very close to the bars area, particularly the “Siroco” bar, with great rolls, sandwiches and shakes.
